ESSEX Architecture Weekend in 2016 was a programme of tours and events celebrating the county’s pioneering role in twentieth century architecture. Sub-titled ‘The Modernist County’, the weekend centred around the county’s three key modernist estates, Silver End, Bata East Tilbury and Frinton-on-Sea.
Over 3000 visitors enjoyed events across the county, with Silver End Village Hall acting as a base for the weekend, hosting a programme of talks, music and events, alongside three new artistic and architectural commissions.
You can download the official ESSEX Architecture Weekend Guide here, and the events programme here. A forthcoming press report will be available here soon.
Highlights of the weekend included:
Documentation of the different events that made up the weekend can be found in the listings on this site, including films of each talk and images of the various tours and commissions. Events can be filtered by type using the menu.
ESSEX Architecture Weekend was run in conjunction with Heritage Open Days and the RIBA initiative Love Architecture.

Multiple sites across EssexRadical Essex is a project re-examining the county in relation to radicalism in thought, lifestyle, politics and architecture. A programme of events will take place across Essex throughout 2016 and 2017, shedding light on the vibrant, pioneering thinking of the late 19th and 20th centuries. The project will celebrate the crucial role Essex has played in the history of British Modernism and its utopian ideologies under the themes ‘The Modernist County’ and ‘Arcadia for All’.
The Radical Essex site is designed by Fraser Muggeridge studio and Alex Rich, developed by Twelve.
Radical Essex is led by Focal Point Gallery in collaboration with Visit Essex and Firstsite. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England it forms part of the country wide Cultural Destinations programme, a partnership with VisitEngland, supporting arts organisations to work with the tourism sector to deliver projects that maximise the impact culture has on local economies.
