Focal Point Gallery is south Essex’s gallery for contemporary visual art, promoting and commissioning major solo exhibitions, group and thematic shows, a programme of events including performances, film screenings and talks, as well as offsite projects and temporary public artworks.
The organisation currently produces up to seven gallery exhibitions each year, in which artists and curators are given a platform to make new work in response to the gallery’s unique location on the ground floor of the town’s new library and learning facility, The Forum.
Each programme includes a series of educational activities by a range of artists, curators and writers, and aims to establish ongoing collaborations with international arts institutions, and engage with a wide range of local community groups, schools and children.
Focal Point Gallery receives regular funding from Arts Council England as one of the organisation’s national portfolio of funded organisations. The gallery also receives regular support from Southend Borough Council. The programme receives additional funding from other trusts and foundations and collaborates with partners including arts agencies and other organisations to co-produce projects.
Focal Point Gallery is the lead partner in the Radical ESSEX project.

Radical Essex is a project re-examining the county in relation to radicalism in thought, lifestyle, politics and architecture. A programme of events will take place across Essex throughout 2016 and 2017, shedding light on the vibrant, pioneering thinking of the late 19th and 20th centuries. The project will celebrate the crucial role Essex has played in the history of British Modernism and its utopian ideologies under the themes ‘The Modernist County’ and ‘Arcadia for All’.
The Radical Essex site is designed by Fraser Muggeridge studio and Alex Rich, developed by Twelve.
Radical Essex is led by Focal Point Gallery in collaboration with Visit Essex and Firstsite. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England it forms part of the country wide Cultural Destinations programme, a partnership with VisitEngland, supporting arts organisations to work with the tourism sector to deliver projects that maximise the impact culture has on local economies.
